Fuel Strategy Beyond the Card: Routing, Speed, and Idle Discipline

The fuel card gets the attention, but the card only changes what a gallon costs. The bigger lever is how many gallons you burn — and that one is entirely in the driver's seat.

Speed is the quiet variable

Aerodynamic drag rises with the square of speed, which is physics' way of saying the last five miles per hour are the expensive ones. A common rule of thumb puts the cost of each mph above cruising efficiency at roughly a tenth of a mile per gallon. Do your own test: run one week at your usual speed and one week 3–4 mph slower on the same lanes, and compare gallons. Many drivers find the slower week costs them twenty minutes a day and buys back real money.

Idle time burns money standing still

An idling diesel commonly burns somewhere near a gallon an hour — less for smaller engines, more with the AC working hard. Ten overnight hours of idle is a tank of fuel a week that moved you zero miles. Whatever your rig's answer is — auxiliary power, bunk heater, shore power where it exists, or just honest discipline about shutting down — price it against what idle actually costs you per month. The payback math on idle reduction is usually short.

Route for gallons, not just miles

Out-of-route miles are pure cost: every detour for a cheaper pump, a favorite stop, or a lazy route adds miles that nobody pays for. Plan fuel stops where the route already goes, and let price-per-gallon decide between stations on the corridor rather than pulling you off it. Terrain counts too — the flat route that runs ten miles longer sometimes burns less than the mountain shortcut.

And keep the basics honest: tire pressure checked cold and weekly, filters on schedule, alignment straight. None of it is glamorous; all of it shows up in the tank.

Measure it or you're guessing

Track one number: miles per gallon, weekly, same way every time. Fuel is most operators' biggest single cost after the truck itself, and mpg is the only honest scoreboard for everything above. When the number moves, ask why; when it improves, you'll know exactly which habit paid for itself.
